Characterisation of non-linear viscoelastic foods by the indentation technique

A method to determine the non-linear viscoelastic constitutive constants from indentation force–displacement data corresponding to different indentation speeds has been developed. The method consists of two parts. In the first part, the force–displacement data is expressed as two functions which represent the strain and the time-dependent responses, respectively. From these functions, the time-dependent constants and the instantaneous force–displacement response are obtained. In the second part, the strain-dependent variables are determined from the instantaneous force–displacement response through an inverse analysis based on the Levenberg–Marquardt method. The method was verified by numerical experiments using the properties of cheese as examples.     

A superhydrophobic magnetic elastomer actuator for droplet motion control

For the fast droplet transportation on an open surface, a new magnetic elastomer with a superhydrophobic surface has been developed. Because the surface is superhydrophobic, the water droplet can easily roll off on the surface. The movement of the droplet was controlled by a deliberate local deformation of the surface of the elastomer induced by magnetic actuation. The direction and speed of the droplet motion was easily controlled by changing the surface topography using magnetic force. We also demonstrate the applicability of the devices as a new type of open‐surface digital microfluidics using a simple chemical reaction. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

On representations of solutions of 1–dimensional stochastic differential equations with reflecting boundary conditions

In this paper we give representations of the solution of 1–dimensional stochastic differential equation (SDE for short) with reflecting barrieres. To this we construct the solution of deterministic Skorohod equation with two reflecting boundaries and show which can be expressed by the operator “sup inf”. Then the solution of given SDE can be represented by a form that depend on a reflecting Brownian motion determined by solving the deterministic Skorohod eqyation     

Hysteresis behaviour of the nematic-cholesteric phase transition for liquid crystals on polyimide films without use of the rubbing technique

Abstract

The hysteresis behaviour of the nematic-cholesteric phase transition in liquid crystals is closely connected with the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules on the surfaces of treated solid substrates. We have investigated the hysteresis as a function of rubbing strength, using rubbing technology that controls the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules. The surface alignment direction contributes to the hysteresis width, is not dependent on rubbing strength, and is only slightly related to pretilt angles. A no-rubbing treatment, that is, random alignment, is important in-order to create a large hysteresis width on homogeneously aligned polyimide films.     

Pretilt angle generation by UV exposure during imidization of polyimide

We investigated pretilt angle generation and liquid crystal (LC) alignment by ultraviolet exposure during the imidization of polyimide (PI). The generated pretilt angle of a nematic (N) LC using an in situ photo-alignment method is smaller than that using a conventional photo-alignment method on a surface of PI having side chains. The NLC pretilt angles using an in situ photo-alignment method injected at isotropic phase increased with annealing were observed.
